I have spent years telling people that whole fruit beats juice, and I still believe it. So when a headline told me a daily glass of juice lowered depression scores while whole fruit did nothing, my first reaction was not delight. It was a question: who paid for this?

The answer is sitting in the funding line, and it turns a small four-week study into something worth being annoyed about. A tiny trial, industry money, and the single most flattering result the sponsor could have asked for.

The trial itself was small. Dr Courtney Neal, then at Newcastle University, ran a randomized study on 42 adults who were barely eating any produce, two portions of fruit and vegetables a day or fewer. She split them into three groups of fourteen. One carried on as usual. One bumped whole fruits and vegetables up to the UK’s 5-a-day target. The third hit the same target but reached part of the way there by adding one daily glass of 100% fruit juice or a smoothie. Four weeks later the researchers measured depression symptoms with the PHQ-9, the nine-question screen clinicians use to flag depression.

The juice group came out 2.52 points lower on the 27-point scale than the do-nothing controls, an adjusted mean of 2.93 against 5.45. The group that piled on whole fruits and vegetables without the juice showed no significant improvement at all. So this is not “eat more produce, feel better.” Read literally, it says the juice did something the apple and the broccoli didn’t.

That runs backward from everything I know about how juice behaves in a body. When you eat an orange, the fiber is still wrapped around the sugar, so your gut has to break the whole thing down slowly, the sugar trickles into your blood, and your liver handles it in stride. Juice strips the fiber out and hands your gut a fast pour of fructose with nothing to slow it down. It is exactly why nutrition people, me included, spend years telling you to eat the fruit and skip the glass. So why would the stripped-down version be the thing that nudged a mood score while the intact fruit sat there doing nothing?

I can think of one genuinely interesting answer and one boring one, and the boring one is winning. The interesting answer is chemistry: the Newcastle team points to older work on citrus juice improving blood flow to the brain, and it is true that crushing fruit ruptures the plant cells and can free up more of certain compounds, the flavonoids and anthocyanins, than chewing does. Some of those are being studied for effects on brain inflammation and blood flow. If that were the mechanism, it would be worth chasing. But this trial did not measure a single one of them. It measured a questionnaire, in fourteen people, for a month.

The boring answer is that fourteen people per group is tiny, four weeks is short, and a 2.52-point wobble on the PHQ-9 in people who were never clinically depressed is exactly the size of thing that appears and vanishes as noise when your sample is this small. Both group averages land in the minimal-to-mild band, the bottom 0-to-9 stretch of the scale. Nobody was pulled out of a depression here. A screening number drifted, and one of three small groups happened to drift a little further.


Then there is the funding. The study was paid for by the Fruit Juice Science Centre, which presents itself as an independent body sharing “the latest scientific insights” with health professionals. The Fruit Juice Science Centre is owned and legally hosted by AIJN, the European Fruit Juice Association, the trade body for the companies that sell the juice. Its governance, by its own account, comes from representatives of its funders. This is the juice industry paying for research on juice. And of all the ways this study could have been framed, the one that landed is the most useful to the sponsor: not “produce helps,” which would have shared the credit with the whole apple, but “the juice was the active ingredient.”

I would love to tell you this is a one-off. It isn’t. Sitting a few feet away in the literature is a 2022 paper in Nutrients reporting that 100% fruit juice was associated with better cognitive and mood measures in US adults. Funder: the Juice Products Association, the American juice trade group. Different continent, different trade body, same happy conclusion. When an industry keeps commissioning the studies and keeps landing on “our product is good for your brain,” the thing being reliably produced is the study, not the effect.

And it matters, because the evidence nobody is paying for points the other way. A 2024 JAMA Pediatrics meta-analysis tied each additional daily serving of 100% fruit juice to weight gain in both children and adults, about 0.21 kg more per serving in the adult cohorts and measurable BMI gain in kids. That is the trade-off the mood research quietly steps around. You are drinking sugar. A glass every day, for years, is not a free mental-health intervention. It is a metabolic decision with a mood questionnaire stapled to the marketing.

So what do I actually take from this? Not nothing. The chemistry angle is interesting enough that I would genuinely like to see it tested by people the juice companies aren’t paying, with more than fourteen participants and a follow-up that outlasts a single month. My curiosity is intact. But the burden of proof sits with the people selling the glass, and right now they have handed me a small four-week questionnaire study they funded themselves.

Me, I am still eating the orange. If my mood needs a lift I will take the sunlight, the walk, and the whole fruit with its fiber wrapped around the sugar the way it grew, and I will let the juice lobby keep funding studies about the thing it needs you to buy. When an independent lab runs this without a trade group signing the checks, I will happily change my mind. Until then, the glass stays in the cupboard.
