There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over me when I read a scientific paper and notice who is missing from it. This week I kept returning to a single absence. A little girl, six years old, whose parents spent a fortune trying to rewrite the letters of her brain, and who did not survive the week. The work went on. A journal published the science that grew from the same soil, and her name is nowhere in it. She became a data point that got tidied out of the record.

I sat with that longer than I meant to. We talk a lot in this line of work about rigor and endpoints and statistical power, and those things matter. But a study is also a story about real people who trusted someone in a white coat, and when the ending is inconvenient the temptation to let it fall out of the frame is very human and very dangerous.

So that is the thread I want you carrying into your Sunday. Not fear of the science, which can be extraordinary, but a stubborn insistence that the people in it get counted. The evidence only means something if we refuse to look away from the parts that hurt.
